Tuesday Mayor making.

Tuesday will see the annual Mayor making Council meeting, this year and due to the numbers of invitees the ceremony will be held at Highcliffe Castle and at a later time than usual in order to make it easier for guests from our local commerce and industry to attend. This ceremony is an important part of the tradition of our Ancient Borough when one serving Mayor is replaced by the new first Citizen and sees the end of the Council year and the beginning of the new one. The member management structures are re-constituted as are the various posts including Portfolio holders and members responsible for outside bodies. This year and in consideration of the financial climate the Mayors lunch will be a buffet as opposed to the previous 'sit down' affair. I think this is a more considerate approach in these times of economic stress and reflects the drive by this administration to provide ceremony with due regard to expenditure.

In these straightened times I would have thought the first place where savings could be found would be by abolishing the totally unnecessary office of Mayor. The thousands of pounds saved could go towards far more worthy causes than jollies for our "first citizen" (who more than likely wasn't even born in the borough anyway). I suspect the majority of local people, like myself wouldn't give a fig if the mayoralty was consigned to the dustbin of history.

Thanks for this it is such an emotive subject that I intend to publish your comments on my next blog just to see if there are many who agree with you.

Previous comment removed, this one punctuated and rephrased slightly for clarity:

Response to Somerford1962: You seem to do a lot of thinking and suspecting.

How do you know he wasn't born in the Borough? And if they've given years of good local service, even if they were born in the Shetland Islands, does it matter?

Have you any EVIDENCE that most people want the Mayoralty to be abolished? Is it up to you to abolish something which has lasted for around 750 years to further some leftist political agenda? (You seem very keen on lizards, however, so your dedication to modernisation doesn't seem to go that far!)

I quote from the Echo, about the new mayor (my paragraphing):

“A ‘SIMPLE sailor’ was sworn in as Mayor of Christchurch at a ceremony at Highcliffe Castle.

Long-standing borough councillor John Lofts, who serves the Highcliffe ward and is known affectionately among his colleagues as “young John the simple sailor”, became mayor at the council’s annual meeting at Highcliffe Castle.

He was elected on to the borough council in 1987 and to Dorset County Council in 1989, where he remained for 20 years.
Cllr Lofts served on the police authority for 13 years and also on the Dorset Pension Fund. He has also served as a governor of both the Highcliffe schools and their predecessors for more than 20 years. Three years ago he was appointed as an honorary freeman of the borough."

Perhaps you could tell us what YOU have done for the community, except perhaps trolling online.

I believe you were born in the borough, from other comments made. Have you considered the possibility that living elsewhere for some years, rather than spending your whole life in one area, might actually broaden the important living experience of the incumbent and bring even more to the role?
