Committees
So the dust is beginning to settle and Councillors getting used to getting on with the job. The interesting thing about being a Councillor is that the way you perform is entirely up to you and subject to the difference you want to make to objectives set from your community. On your patch you are the innovator, the originators and the achiever, in the Council chamber you are part of the Borough team and work to the benefit of the community as a whole. This means sitting on committees headed by chairman who essentially are my business managers. Their role is to deal with matters at hand in an efficient and measured way using the expertise and talent of the individual councillors, this means considerable debate and of course deference to the officers who are the executive in respect of protocol and statutory issues. Vice chairs help the chair in this aim and get experience along the way, a good role for enthusiastic new councillors who want to learn the ropes. I like the idea of rotating vice chairs in order that more councillors can gain experience, but this is entirely up to chairman. My role is to ensure that everyone in committed and engaged in the tasks and directions set. We are on our way!
