Forthcoming local elections
I am trying to get my head around the structure of the candidates list for Christchurch Borough Council for the election on May 5th. In Mudeford ward there will only be polling for the 'No to A/V' referendum as the nominated candidates are unopposed and therefore elected. The paucity of candidates from the Christchurch cell of the Liberal party must give some indication of the level of their support from within their organisation which would appear very low if this is all they can muster, the Labour contingent is tactical as usual and we wait to see what UKIP can bring to the local electoral process especially in West Highcliffe where three are standing. At the recent County elections they managed to ensure that a pro Europe Candidate was elected!I am not sure this overall list can be described as representing a robust democratic process in Christchurch and hope sincerely that it does not reflect an apathy developing in the political base of the Borough. Conservatives clearly present themselves as meaning business in all wards and the electorate will I am sure take note of that. I am just nipping down to the betting shop to see if they will give me good odds on my predictions!
