I mourn the passing of the road sweeper

I had a very interesting letter from one of my residents in Stanpit about the problem of people using the streets as a litter bin and even worse, dog toilet. His conclusion like mine was that this was something to do with a lack of pride in this wonderful place where we live and that I should continue with the pride of place leaflet we produced in the summer just to remind people that they are as equally responsible for civic cleanliness as CBC. I did explain that following a review of CBC street scene services I had noticed a distinct improvement especially in areas around Purewell shops but we still had a long way to go the encourage people to take their litter home with them, especially doggie do. He reminded me of the old system of a man ,who you got to know. with a brush and a large receptacle on wheels who regularly toured your street and left it spotless, even under parked cars.Alas those days are gone and now noisy machines do what they can in the areas accessible, but only when the street is strewn with litter.I wonder if with over two million persons unemployed that era will make a return. I doubt it but I did agree with my resident that we should mourn the passing of the old fashioned road sweeper.
