A petition was presented to full Council yesterday by the good people of Burton concerning the appalling way Dorset County Council handled the consultation process which was supposed to fully inform and engage with the local population over the very important matter of mineral extraction programmed to be right on their doorstep.
The consultation clearly failed miserably leaving the residents with a recommendation to gain all the information they wanted from the 'Dorset for you' website. I feel that someone has totally missed the point of what local consultation is all about. The idea I thought, was to gauge resident opinion and act on it in such a way as to make them feel included and part of the decision making process. What appears to be the case is that DCC just determine what is to happen and their process of consultation is no more than an advisory situation following which they can tick the box'consulted with the public'. This another example like Kelly's Kitchen, where the priorities of the people of Christchurch are being ignored. This is not what should happen in a so called, fully inclusive society. Just how we get the message over I am not sure but I would like to see more elected County members standing up for Christchurch to make sure that the voice of our community is not only heard but also acted upon.
