Saxon Square and the Travel Lodge, Christchurch a good place to invest.

Yesterday I donned hard hat, toetectors and visibility jacket and was taken into the old medical centre in Saxon Square which is just now teaming with builders who are knocking six bells out of the place. The objective is the much awaited opening in June next year of the Christchurch Travel Lodge Hotel. I have to say that I was quite taken back as to the size and complexity of the project and I do think that once completed this project will contribute greatly to the Christchurch offer to holiday and business visitors. As for the refurb of the Square, this starts shortly with most of the structural work taking place at night thus minimising the effect on the businesses. It did occur to me that those currently digging up our roads might take a lesson from this so as to reduce the inconvenience to residence and business alike. However that is a different story! I understand that negotiations are reaching a positive conclusion in respect of the tenure of the empty units in the square and I can for see this area of the town centre again becoming the focal attraction it was designed to be. This is a £4 million project proving that Christchurch is regarded as a good place to invest! What we have to do now is look at our town centre transport infrastructure to balance the pedestrian/ traffic issue so as to make the visit to our high street a better experience for residents, visitors and businesses. A tough challenge but with the increase in visitor numbers this year, a challenge we have to face.

Not everyone would agree with you. I know of a native of Christchurch who wants to set up a business with the money he will receive when he is made redundant. Naturally,he has looked at his home town despite having concerns about its age demographic. Unfortunately, since then, the proliferation of retirement developments given planning permission in or around the town centre has tipped the balance against and he has decided it would just not be viable to invest his money in Christchurch. He is now looking at Romsey instead which, he tells me,is a far more vibrant town.

I'm sure you're right! In that case, have you thought of moving to Romsey, which is also in your beloved Hampshire and doesn't have such a large elderly population? I'm sure you'd be happier and therefore grumble and moan less, consequently increasing the satisfaction of those of us who are actually happy to live in Christchurch and environs!

Sorry can't agree with you or your mate. Christchurch is a great place to invest. Nice though Romsey is, and I go there often, it does not cut the mustard compared to this town. You should be more supportive of the place you claim to be so fond of. Good to see you using positive words though, like vibrant , very unusual!

So how do you explain the news that 24 real jobs are to be lost with the closure of the Coastguard Training Centre at Friars Cliff? Apparently, the site is to be used to provide more social housing for millionaires! Yet another consequence of the ongoing geriatricfication of this once living working town.

CBC are not part of the decision making process in respect of the reorganisation/rationalisation of the organisation. But we are the planning authority so you will just have to get involved as a concerned resident. As far as jobs are concerned we are well ahead this year and more to come. My role as board member of the LEP is taking me into a position whereby we are trying to get investment to get 10,000/16,000jobs at the Airport. Is that enough for you?
