Wild flowers in Christchurch

The more discerning of you may have noticed the array of wild flowers in various locations across the Borough including Barrack Road and Stony Lane roundabout following seeding earlier this year. I am delighted that we have had many comments from visitors and residents as to how this has enhanced our Borough so is clearly very popular. Congratulations to our Countryside team for following through on this initiative and for the really nice compliments both verbally and by email saying how much this is appreciated. More next year and maybe in some interesting locations!

A very welcome initiative for which all involved deserve a pat on the back. Perhaps the council along with the countryside team could look at ways to help our once common native bird species such as house sparrows and starlings whose numbers appear to be in freefall. I believe that much of this can be attributed to the fitting of plastic soffit boards to many houses which has resulted in the birds no longer having access under the eaves which is where they traditionally nested. Would it be possible to stipulate that a condition of planning consent for any new construction in Christchurch is that it should be bird friendly?

Interesting point, in respect of supporting bio-diversity including bird species I am sure you are aware of the initiatives taken in respect of the habitat at Stanpit Marsh. Really successful! So we can make a difference if we put our mind to it. In respect of wild flowers I have called for a further expansion of areas to be included next year and more to come this year!
