20mph speed limits in Home Zones
I met with the Police and Crime Commissioner this week together with the Chairmen of the Community Safety Partnership of Poole and Bournemouth. He described a change in policy shortly to be announced by Dorset Police regarding the ability of communities to call for and deliver 20mph speed limits in specific areas. This is really quite interesting because up to now Police have been reluctant to change from the blanket 30 mph limit for reasons to do with their ability to enforce. Now communities willing to engage in 'Speedwatch' will be able to apply stating their concerns about speeding vehicles and 'Dorpol' will give it due consideration. As I understand it details will be made available to interested communities and they must show willing to have some responsibility for speed checking. County Council will have to be included in the process due to the requisite signage change. Should anyone/community be interested then I will be happy to steer them in the right direction.

Local communities have been pushing for this for some year. Many hours were spent campaigning for a 20mph speed limit along Stanpit, but local Police showed very little interest. Now maybe things will be different.
No doubt Somerford1962 will put forward a better plan that they use in Hampshire.
I am in favour of lowering speed limits on all roads as it happens.
