Thursday's Election results
Well, all our County team were returned to serve four years as County Councillors so out of 27 Conservative members in Dorset Christchurch has five. So I think we can assume that as far as the issues giving us real concern such as Education and schooling, Highways, transport and infra-structure including our High Street, our County Councillors can make a difference by seeing tangible benefits brought to Christchurch. Dorset County will be under the leadership of Councillor Flower from East Dorset, an excellent choice to take us forward and a person I have every confidence in to respond to the 'wake up' call from disaffected voters who saw reason to vote for the anti- Europe, anti immigration party in what in reality should have been local issue election. However the message should be received loud and clear that macro issues like those described above can impact on local elections when a population feels for whatever reason, disenfranchised. More to the point however will be the direction that Cllr. Flower gives to County in terms of prudent and business-like financial management of which he has great experience and the services provided by County based on clear evidence from Districts and Boroughs as determined by the newly elected Councillors. With so much at stake as a result of the national economic situation those Councillors I am sure will oversee a good Conservative administration which will see us through to a time when our County will be seen as an example for others in delivering outcomes and making Dorset an even better place to live, visit and work. Congratulations to our County Councillor team.

Hardly an overwhelming endorsement though was it? Some of the succesful candidates received their mandate from little more than ten per cent of the electorate. Why are so many of the population disenfranchised? Something has gone wrong with democracy in this country.
