Anti Mayoralty comment on my blog
I posted an item on the traditional Mayor making ceremony which was held this year at Highcliffe Castle on Tuesday with a new emphasis on a modest presentation due to the austere economic time we are experiencing at present. Actually the evening went very well with attendance of a considerable number of guests from commerce and industry including the Chairman of the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership. In my opinion we maintained the established and important style of the occasion in accordance with the importance of the Christchurch heritage recognising that this is an essential part of the offer Christchurch makes to residents, visitors and those that are employed within our borders. But a comment appeared on my blog from someone who wishes to maintain anonymity and I thought it important to share this with you to see if there is much support from readers for his/her sentiment. I must say that from my position within the Council I see the Mayoralty as something we should protect from those that see it as offensive as it represents the heritage of this Ancient Borough and makes a seriously important contribution to the Councils connectivity with the community. I suspect the writer of the following comment has no idea of the work that the Mayor does throughout the year!

In these straightened times I would have thought the first place where savings could be found would be by abolishing the totally unnecessary office of Mayor. The thousands of pounds saved could go towards far more worthy causes than jollies for our "first citizen" (who more than likely wasn't even born in the borough anyway). I suspect the majority of local people, like myself wouldn't give a fig if the mayoralty was consigned to the dustbin of history.

Perhaps those interested in this clearly emotive issue could comment on this blog or write/email to me at the Council.
Thanks

Councillor Nottage, I hope and trust that you will protect the role of Mayor in this Borough. This role brings dignity, and the Mayor is the Queens Representative in Christchurch.
Please allow me to quote a response you made on this blog on or around the 27th. August last year, "Can I finally reiterate CBC is secure, waste management is secure, the Mayoralty is secure".
If "Somerford 1962" would like to see the role of Mayor become redundant, then I suggest this person implements a campaign to that effect, although I doubt if the campaign would get off the ground. Some of us give up our time to work and help others in the community, and in this respect I believe people such as myself who give numerous hours each week for our communities, have a right to fight for the god of the community, and there are those who spend their time pontificating what should be happening in the community yet do nothing to contribute towards the community. Is it possible that the commenter "Somerford 1962" could belong to the latter.
Please accept my apologies in my above comment:
The sentence "have a right to right to fight for the god of the community" should of course read: "Have a right to fight for the good of the community".
Well, as we are supposed to "all be in it together" I would have thought that there would be no sacred cows when it came to looking where savings could be made. But as this is obviously such a vital institution may I make a suggestion? How about doing away with the mayoral limo and having a Dutch style bicycling mayor? Very enviromentally friendly too! For that matter, I would like to see an awful lot more councillors getting "on their bikes" or possibly utilising the free bus passes of which most of them are in possession. It would save a fortune in travel expenses and might give them some perspective on how the other half live.
I like your idea Somerford although when Denise gets the gig, no less than a top of the range roller would do, Buy David a peaked cap so you could save on the driver, no less than this is good enough for the best Cllr. in xchurch by a country mile and then some .
I can imagine that, they would be just like Lady Penelope and Parker. I notice that you are as equally "impressed" with the current Grange Ward encumbents as I am!
Am I right in thinking that the role of Mayor of Christchurch is protected un The Royal Charter?
Who cares? We can always declare independence!
Tell you what, Somerford1962: Why don't YOU declare your own personal independence and leave the rest of us to enjoy our historic traditions!
