Last nights meeting of full Council

A packed chamber, controversial issues, good debate and presentations all contributed to a very entertaining and informative meeting. A shame that the majority of the attendees left after their particular issue was presented but I suppose that is to be expected, after all who is interested in the machinations of local government if it doesn't affect you personally! Notwithstanding, the Council was, in my opinion, seen at its best, not just dealing with the cut and thrust of opposition but exemplifying what a good community Christchurch is with the awards from Britain in Bloom. The gold award to Stanpit Marsh was of particular interest to me as Councillor for the ward and further acknowledgement of the work done by our Countryside Officers and their team of volunteers. A special mention also for the Friends of Christchurch Station, their 150 years celebration party was given highly deserved recognition. I was particularly pleased with the presentations from the five portfolio holders that showed that this administration is on top of some very difficult challenges in these austere times but were dealing with them in an innovative and professional manner and as a result delivering real benefits to our community as well as achieving objectives described in our corporate plan. This was the last meeting attended by one of our favourite officers who is due to retire in December. She will be missed.

Thank you Mr Nottage. I have had occasion to criticise you in the past and have tried to become more supportive. So I am rather disappointed that this particular item mentions your displeasure with most of the ‘attendees’ and their approach to local government. This once more smacks of arrogance (mentioned on a good number of occasions previously and even in your blog) and dismissiveness – the implication is that many good Councillors are not bothered about the overall picture, but only in their own small worlds (I quote: “Who is interested in the machinations of local government if it doesn’t affect you personally!”). You, however, have to be there as Council ‘Leader.’ Never mind, hopefully with your leadership they will soon be able to reflect your real dedication to the interests of the whole Borough! No element of sarcasm here, of course, and well done for describing the excellent work of your own ward.

Thanks for this , probably because of the way I described the evening you have got the wrong end of the stick. I was referring to those good citizens who attended for their own item only and left immediately afterwards. It was not a reflection on Councillors at all, they have to stay to the end whether they like it of not.(sarcasm) Clearly Councillors have a primary function in representing their wards and delivering outcomes but when the Council comes together they have to be more strategic and Bouroughcentric. I am pleased to say that this Council is dealing with that very well.

Thanks. I stand corrected (on this one!).
