A tough week at the helm

It's certainly been like helming through rough waters this week with the Officer decision to review the planning process for the three Supermarkets as a result of serious concerns from the legal team and the announcement of the shared service review for officers in the Democratic Services team at CBC and EDDC.I missed the LGA conference as I thought it more important to be close at hand and in Christchurch in 'hands on' mode. Fortunately I have access to most of the issues and notes from the conference and as I understand it no mind boggling issues raised apart from a clear indication that we will be getting more of the same and that means a likelihood of even more financial challenges in the future. The process of developing one management team for two councils takes another step forward this week as the inevitable changes to our staffing levels in certain areas are announced. Not something that is pleasant for Officers to do but in these dark days a necessity if we are to keep our heads above the water. Notwithstanding, the heritage of our historic Borough together with the Mayoralty has been highlighted as essential priorities for future management and indeed we are seeing the current Mayor expanding his role to include a drive for new business in the Borough and the connection to our existing and vibrant commerce. Indeed his reception held at Highcliffe Castle this week included guests from education, charities and business. Finally for today a great deal of excitement has been caused by the owner of a Mudeford sea side cottage putting an application to our planning team for a complete rebuild. My phone has not stopped ringing and what I am saying is that our Planning Control team will deal with the matter in their normal, efficient and thorough way, taking into account the points raised by objectors and supporters and conclude on the basis of Planning policy and law. So no panic, no hysteria, the matter will be given the same careful attention applied to any application of this nature. Like you I am sure, this weather is getting to me let's hope we get some sunshine soon.
