A Remembrance day Christchurch can be proud of
I have always said that Remembrance day sees Christchurch at its best but this years organisation and preparation by the Legion was exemplary to say the least. The High street procession was dignified, the Legion band sharp and professional and in fact all the participants added to the poignancy of the occasion. The moving wreath laying ceremony at the Priory, a reminder of just how many made the ultimate sacrifice and the attendance of so many youngsters reminded me of how important this day was to me and my family living in London just after the last world war. In those days heavy guns fired at 11 am somewhere near the Cenotaph, brought London to a stop. But back to Christchurch, well done to all involved, those hundreds that lined the High Street were treated to an exhibition of reverence and humility which again highlighted the respect this community has for this event. My only complaint was the rather meagre public attendance at Purewell at 9-45 am and the fact that some challenged dog owner had seen that the pavement just outside the memorial was littered with dog poo! St Johns Church again performed this street corner service with great dignity and my sincere thanks go to them. In the evening a night of big band music at The Regent Centre, further memories from a past and much loved era.
