Waste collection

So now we know what is being rolled out by the Dorset Waste Partnership across Dorset in order to maximise our return and minimise our waste collection costs. As it happens it is not much different from the system that we at CBC introduced to West Christchurch some five years ago as a trial to maintain a good service and increase recycling rates. According to the residents the system works very well and they are very happy with it,on top of that their recycling rates have leaped to levels not seen in the Borough before. Why is this important you may ask? In simple terms the stuff we throw away is a valuable resource and the more we collect the more we can sell and 'cleaner' the product the better the price. Hence the need for paper to be separated from glass and so on. Government is increasing the tax on landfill so we just have to reduce that element to an absolute minimum. If DWP get it right, and I am sure they will, we shall see savings across Dorset of about £2 million at present day costs, our share of that will be about £100k plus or minus a black sack or two. Not an amount to be sneezed at, for a start anyway! The matter is before the next Community Service meeting on Wednesday 19th October, should be interesting.
