Movement on Highways

Christchurch Council is getting used to punching above it's weight and on the issue of traffic Dorset County have responded to my letters and resulting publicity so very shortly an high level meeting is scheduled with them when the subject can be explored and priorities decided. Key to this exercise will be how we can improve the Christchurch High Street experience and the whole issue of the Fountain roundabout/ Waitrose dumb bell. Schemes for sustainable transport links from Poole/ Bournemouth/ Christchurch are high priority but so is making sure that Christchurch PLC has adequate transport systems to support new businesses and residents are not subject to the gridlocks suffered this summer. We are taking soundings of how the traffic is behaving whilst the Bridge Street works continue and will be keen to see how the bus companies have 'fared' on the diversion routes they have had to take. The subject is further complicated with and by developments at Sommerford Road and our determination to get Christchurch town centre buzzing again. Notice has been taken of how successful the lights at the Stour Road junction both in terms of traffic flow and safety and of course the importance of maintaining the vitality of the Fairmile end of the High Street. So lots to think about and loads of challenges.

Dear Councillor Nottage,

You must be congratulated for your sterling efforts with regards to highways in the Borough...the by pass, and Somerford Road/Bridge Street are continuing sources of frustration and annoyance to us locals...speaking with a Police Officer last week on the subject he described East Christchurch as a car park come summer, winter, morning, noon and night.

I visited the Community Enagagment for Beagle Aircraft last week and was shocked at their plans and what it will do to make the current traffic head aches even worse...lorries blocking Bridge Street while they deliver and cutting across the pedestrian walkway they propose...I could see a child or elderly person being hit by a juggernaut...added to that the traffic will back up Bridge Street as deliveries happen...then we will see more traffic on Bridge Street, Stony Lane and Somerford Road as well as the Stony Lane roundabout. The extra traffic and resulting tailbacks and jams will hurt Christchurch PLC as I note you call it...I am so pleased that we the residents have you fighting our corner to stop this superstore and the trouble it will cause us all. The highways consultant there for Beagle admitted to me he had never been down Bridge Street - incredible that they will submit an application when they know so little.

I like many others are deeply concerned that following BAE's removal of jobs from the Borough last week that we are going to loose Beagle to at best the airport...which will of course mean congestion increased at the airport...and at worse Beagle and it's highly skilled jobs being lost to another part of the country...the effects of Beagle going will be felt especially in your ward.

Please keep up the good work and sort our roads and stop our skilled jobs leaving and traffic becoming worse as people flock from west to east to shop.

Regards,

Jimmy
