Druitt Gardens

It is good to see that at last something is being done to open up this glorious area making it not just a haven for wildlife in the Town Centre but also a place for our residents and visitors for relaxation and recreation. Already swathes of grassland are appearing, responding to the clearance of redundant trees and undergrowth and work will continue through the winter months to make further improvements. The problem of the old Druitt Hall still exists which dominates the entrance from the High Street and energy has to be applied to deal with this edifice whilst the work on the gardens is underway. Elected ward Councillors and County Councillors agree the the hall has passed its sell by date and should be removed forthwith and I am hopeful that this course of action will be acted out sooner rather than later. What is important is that having dealt with one problem elected Councillors ensure that it is not replaced by another as a result of ambitions set in the last century and which are unrealistic in these hard economic times. Ward Councillors have been working to see that this part of Christchurch reflects a new and exciting approach to our Town Centre and I have to applaud their efforts.I await the outcome with keen interest.

Councillor Nottage appears not to understand that 'redundant trees and undergrowth' are just what is required to provide a 'haven for wildlife' and that 'swathes of grassland' are not what is required. It is just this type of ill-informed opinion which has caused councillors and council officers to set aside the agreed and consulted management plan for the Gardens and follow their own whims. Miss Charlotte Druitt, our benefactor, who wanted the Gardens to be a bird sanctuary, will be spinning in her grave!
