Christchurch traffic: what can be done
I smile when I hear people talk about to the existing Christchurch by-pass, it to me is an anachronism to describe a road that funnels traffic into the town centre as a by-pass. But that is not the worst of it because quite clearly the traffic problems we see so regularly in our town are not going to get better unless someone looks holistically of how we are going to deal with potential growth in community population, business growth and an increasing number of visitors. Already established businesses are complaining that deliveries and collections are being effected and to take nearly an hour to navigate from one end of the town to another is becoming onerous. So what can be done? In my opinion doing nothing is not an option, one way traffic flows are constantly highlighted as the answer although I have real concerns. What I intend to do is put this problem on a different footing at Dorset County who are the responsible authority for our highways and call for an assessment of the present situation and some direction for the future including the task of making a visit to our town centre a better experience than it is now. It will be a long term project but frankly I am totally fed up with the current inertia that I am faced with when I bring this matter up. Lets see what can be achieved by raising the stakes!
