Stanpit Marsh erosion
Those stalwarts that regularly walk the marsh will be aware of the problem caused by erosion of Grimmery Bank. This has made the path difficult to negotiate so please take care. Just what is going on in this part of the marsh we are still not sure about but as we have a statutory duty in respect of the sustainability of this SSSI our partners English Nature will have to be involved before any sort of repair is considered. It could be that the loss of root formation as a result of erosion has made this bank vulnerable as I noticed this morning further breeches are being made right along the bank. So a measured approach will have to be taken to ensure that damage to the marsh is avoided and the apparently rapid change to the natural marshland is understood and dealt with. This will mean that walking along this area is going to be difficult for some time. Such a shame when we have made such a difference to the bridges over the last few months. However this incident does go to prove how weather patterns are now affecting areas like this marsh reducing the margins for not just human use but wild life also, the debate will always be which is more important.
