Twenty is plenty
You are probably aware that Barry Sherwin is running a trial petition to see if support exists for a complete review of traffic management in Stanpit and Purewell. This hit the local shops two weeks ago and is in the form of a statement about reducing speeds and a request for your support and address. This is quite a controversial issue with arguments on both sides but it does ask the question is our highway code designed for levels of traffic flow from yesteryear, suitable for to days conditions especially in home zones and areas where front doors are right on or almost on the road.'Twenty is plenty' now applies to all our Safer Schools areas and appears to be working, the petition poses the question why are people allowed to drive at speeds which cause such a perceived reaction from the residents that they deem it as anti-social behaviour. In Christchurch our fatality rate from road deaths is about 26 per year, would 'twenty is plenty' reduce that figure ,if so it has to be considered. As I understand it the petition is getting an extraordinary amount of support and is up to about 300 signatures. This to me highlights that the matter has to be considered and I look forward to the presentation at full council.
