Burton Road litter pick

For the last six months I have had, at my surgery, many complaints about the street scene in Purewell. I even had two delightful ladies explaining that their lives were blighted by the carelessness of schoolchildren from Grange school who in their opinion were responsible. I have now, in my opinion, exploded that myth. On Saturday 30 people, including kids from Grange school toiled for three hours and cleared litter from all the areas that I have had complaints about including the whole of Burton Road. The school kids are on holiday so I was expecting the area to stay clear of the sweet wrappers and stuff which I was told were discarded on the school route. On Tuesday I revisited the area to find adult detritus scattered just about the whole length of Burton Road including beer tins, coke tins, plastic bags and whole newspapers carelessly dumped and some flying about in the wind. Also the garden area in Purewell by the Hairdressers where on Saturday I had filled a complete bag from that area alone, was again strewn with similar rubbish. Now this is very disappointing but it does give me an indication of where we are going with this whole street scene issue. I made a difference by taking a firm stand over dog poo and we are now over double figures in terms of those fined for allowing their dog to defecate on open spaces, I have taken an even stronger stand on anti-social behaviour and now we have one of the quietest areas in Christchurch so the same determination will be directed towards those who have such little pride in where they live that they get some buzz from deliberately spoiling the area for others.
