Where have all the waders gone?

Usually at this time of the year the Stanpit marsh is a circus of birdlife, mainly waders feeding in the margins and making one heck of a din in doing so. This month however I have noticed a massive change with numbers of our normal visitors’ diminished to worrying levels. I was so concerned that I spoke to an extremely knowledgeable ornithologist chum of mine and expressed my dire concerns. Fear not said he just go upstream a mile or two and see what is going on the flood plains and so I did, he was right. Clearly there must be much better pickings from the receding flooded meadows now covered by a black deposit of silt thrown up from the rivers Avon and Stour and containing the juiciest of worms and such for the waders to feed on. So nature has a way of dealing with things to benefit all species living on this planet!

You must be referring to the same meadows that Christchurch Council wanted to build a "relief" road through a few years ago. Thankfully, that idea was a non starter!
