Solent radio to report on Christchurch the retirement centre of the UK
Apparently statistics show somewhere that Christchurch is the retirement capital of the UK. Solent Radio has contacted CBC with the news that they intend to run a program over a week as to how it is to live in a community comprising a huge majority of aged people! Understandably I think, my attitude is a bit anti this approach considering the fantastic opportunities for active people this whole area offers. It does not feel to me to be a community sat in God’s waiting room, indeed quite the opposite. Our £800 million local economy is doing better than most hence the demand from young families for housing in the Borough, facilities for kids from a tender age to their teens ranges from the splash pool at the Quomps to the various activity centres dotted about the place. Schools are dynamic and are bursting to capacity so much so that County is having problems getting Christchurch kids into Christchurch schools. True that the area is a wonderful place to retire so close to the New Forest and access to the coast and rivers but my impression is that retirees are in fact part of the reason we are such a vibrant community. They do engage in activities and projects simply because they the time to do so, that is up until you want to find volunteers for some project and you find that everyone is too busy! Whilst the stats might show that our demographics are on the up in terms of lifespan, I don't see this as any different from other conurbations of similar size. Future retirement age pushing up into the late sixties shows that in the future our so called aged population will follow this demography but in gainful employment. Silver surfers benefiting from technology that will shape society perhaps more so than well meaning organisations or Councils. Paxman tried to portray us as a dribbling senile population in a television program put out on air the week before the Olympic torch came through Christchurch. With the streets lined with excited families from one end of the town to the other this portrayal soon received short thrift. I do hope Solent Radio do not make the same mistake. Does anyone know how I can get in touch with the Mudeford over seventies wind surfing club?
