Flooding in the Borough

Yesterday saw some traumatic flooding experiences for parts of the Borough due to the unprecedented rainfall over the last few weeks. Water poured from the fields in Hurn casing mayhem at Matchams Lane with blocked and collapsed drain compounding the problem. Parts of the Parish of Burton were also hit; water flowing across the terrain from Bransgore making some roads impassable and threatening homes with filthy water. In both areas Conservative Parish and Borough Councillors were at hand to oversee and assist residents having difficulty. They patrolled roads to make traffic aware of dangers and in one case spent four hours sweeping water away from the threatened home of an old lady. Such was the extent of the fluvial flood that CBC's stock of 'Floodsax' was dispersed in hours as concerned residents protected their homes. Again Councillors came to the fore locating sand and bags from well known builder’s merchants. Fire Police and Water companies joined forces to deal with the worst incursions but with further rain forecasted the prospects look fairly grim. Rain that falls on Salisbury Plain today takes months to move underground as it gravitates to the coast so our flood plains will be saturated for a long time yet. So take care when driving, my wife was involved in a car accident this week when a driver following lost attention and wrote his car off driving into the back of the BMW.
