Christchurch is a very safe place to live.

Comparison statistics against last festive season in respect of crime and disorder show a further fall in the number of crimes committed in total and encouragingly a considerable drop in injury incidents resulting from an access of alcohol. So what we have been doing with all involved agencies appears to be working and it would appear that Christchurch can again be regarded as a very safe place to live, work and visit. However we can not be complacent, I do have some concerns about how issues of a domestic nature are showing signs of increase and am very alert to the problems that can arise when families get under pressure due to the dire economic situation some are facing. It seems that as the level of economic uncertainty increases so does the pressure on families and we are very aware of potential consequences.
I am however very positive about this whole area of resident well being and note the reaction to the safety questions in the recent survey are also very positive. Sometimes I think back to what I inherited in 2007, this makes me realise what a great job has been done by CBC, police and partners including the community to make Christchurch an even better, safer place to live.
