On Sunday a member of Homewatch reported a bogus call he had just received from a person claiming to conducting a survey on crime prevention. It became obvious that this was some sort of 'phishing' exercise and the member hung up and reported the matter to Homewatch office. Within five minutes every on-line member had received a warning about the calls and sure enough another member was able to report another incident yesterday. This is why Homewatch in the community is so valuable and why we should be striving to get more and more members signed up. Well done to the team!
Current telephone calls to be wary of are :
Burglar alarms for a pound, then once you have signed up, they charge extortionate monthly fees.
Calls from someone appertaining to be from a major software provider,. They tell you that "there have been error reports sent in from your computer, so will you please log your computer on to the internet so that we can investigate the errors". This is almost certainly someone wanting to gain illegal access to details on your computer.
Calls from so called “Crime Prevention” companies, who again try to get you to hand over your bank details.
Call from a 'representative' of your phone company, informing you that he was disconnecting you because of an unpaid bill. He then demands payment immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-connect at a later date.
These are happening on a day to day basis, please advise Homewatch if you have been affected.
